It is played in a number of variations. American flag rugby is an organized mixed gender team sport. There is no physical contact in this version, and instead two flags are worn hanging from the waist. These flags are attached by velcro to a belt worn on the outside of the sports uniform. American flag rugby is intended for all ages, especially younger players who want to avoid the intense physical contact unavoidable in regular rugby.
Rugby is an intense and challenging sport. Very little protective gear, if any is ever worn. Commonly, players will wear mouth guards and occasionally, depending on their position, will tape their ears down to their head to prevent them from getting ripped off.
